SOUND PEDRO

“We have calcium in our bones, iron in our veins, carbon in our souls, and nitrogen in our brains.  93 percent stardust, with souls made of flames, we are all just stars that have people names.”
― Nikita Gill, author

On SATURDAY June 1st, I’ll be collaborating with MADU.CHINO/Matthew Dumpit alongside NXA Music and Szeho for Sound Pedro: An Evening of Ear-Oriented Multi-Sensorial Presentations.

Location:
Angels Gate Cultural Center (3601 S. Gaffey St. San Pedro, CA 90731)

Time:
6PM-10PM; My set is approx. 7:15PM

Pangalay is a movement meditation of the Sulu archipelago, Philippines.  In my Pangalay teachings, I’ve learned that our very breath is considered the foundational layer of our music.  After that, layering your accompanying music is flexible– as long as one establishes their breath as first and foremost.  Being based on Tongva lands, Los Angeles, I acknowledge that I am of a place where there are as many forms as there are people from all over the world, and I approach this practice with respect and invitation to the native people of this place and to all places.

In the last few months, my movement practice has expanded to frequent yoga, and aqua fitness and rehabilitation, in addition to hula, Philippine dance, and free-flowing shamanic movement.  Everyday in my line of work, I move with and am attuned to children, adults, and elders, and I hear stories from all walks of life of how people approach shifts/lessons as their bodies age.

Throughout the 4 hours, I’ll be dancing Pangalay in meditation, in relation to the ethereality of light design by MADUCHINO, sounds by NXA Music and Szeho, and special guests from our LA kapwa community.  I’ll be adorned in what we envision as Future Filipinx.
